2022 Boys Golf State Champion Team

Description of Program

The MIHS Boys Golf team has become a perennial powerhouse in Kingco with multiple titles achieved in the last decade.  Led by Head Coach Connor Coombs and Assistant Coach, Nathaniel Colo. The MIHS Boys Golf program helps competitive golfers improve their game by being more efficient in course management and strategy, shot and club selection, working with problem shots, and gaining more knowledge about the rules and etiquette necessary to play golf as it should be played.  Through daily driving range use, on-course playing lessons, and weekly matches, the MIHS Golf program does not teach athletes how to play the game of golf, rather we focus on how to be successful at the competitive level, while also placing emphasis on sportsmanship and etiquette.

If you are interested in being a part of our winning MIHS golf tradition, please contact Coach Coombs or stay tuned for try-out information, available in spring/summer.

Golf Camp 2023:

"Golf Camp will be August 26th and 27th. If you are on the team we are leaving from Mercer Island High School on August 26th at 10am. Our first day will be a clinic and 18 holes at Lake Padden Golf Course at 2pm. Cost for Lake Padden will be $30 for junior rates, or $5 for Youth on Course rates. Following day will be at Sudden Valley. Tee times will start at 10:33am and we will have a long drive and closest to the pin contests. Rates at Sudden Valley are $34.50 for juniors. Greens fees will be paid out of pocket from families. BRING CASH OR CARD. We plan to return to MIHS on August 27th at 6pm. Lodging will be paid to your student's ASB account, all other costs such as greens fees, meals, and other miscellaneous costs will be paid for out of pocket. Parents and guardians are welcome to join for any part of the weekend! We will have limited spots for parents and guardians to play golf. Please let Coach Coombs know if you are interested in playing. We also rely heavily on parent and guardian help and support for cooking meals and assisting with AirBnb check in and check out. Any and all support is greatly appreciated and valued!"

Program Philosophy and Perspective -- the foundation for all of our work:

It is our intention at Mercer Island High School to provide a complete athletic program. The Mercer Island program does not focus purely on wins and losses, but recognizes the importance of high school athletics in the development of self-esteem and worth in today’s students. Our coaching staff will work each off-season to create more opportunities for all athletes who join this golf program to develop as people, students, and athletes. We want these young men to grow into responsible adults, who understand how hard work and dedication to themselves and others can translate into success in all aspects of their lives. We will remain consistent over time in our expectations, which allows for all involved to understand their role within the program enabling growth each season.

As a coaching staff we will work this season to accomplish the following:

  1. We will work to help each athlete to perform as well as he, and the team, are capable at all times.
  2. We will work from day one developing goals and a deeper understanding of ourselves so we can grow each day and help each other achieve on and off the course.
  3. We want all of the athletes to understand the rich tradition of the program and work to enhance it.
  4. We want athletes to understand the daily commitment necessary to maximize potential and therefore be prepared each day.
  5. We will encourage communication with each other, parents, and athletes.
  6. We will continue to emphasize positives each day, while finding new ways to challenge all of the athletes when and where necessary.
  7. We will emphasize attendance at practice, work ethic, and motivate each athlete to become the best they can be.
  8. We want all athletes to finish the season with a positive feeling of mutual accomplishment.
  9. All athletes are asked to give the program a commitment for the entire season.

Expectations for playing on the MIHS Golf Team:

Basic scoring criteria (based on 18 holes, stroke play):

JV: 100 – 85, consistently

Varsity: 85 – Par, consistently

Be dedicated to the game of golf and the State Championship success of the MIHS Golf Team.

How to Improve your Golf Game over the Summer:

All competitive golfers take lessons, even professionals. During the summer months, to maximize my players’ abilities and to best learn the difficult game of golf, I recommend that my players take private swing lessons, participate in junior golf camps, play regularly, and compete in junior golf tournaments. Swing lessons are key in helping kids understand the game and develop their skills. Try to get a series of consecutive lessons with the same instructor for the best results.

I recommend as much tournament experience as possible for players, especially over the summer leading into the Fall season. The more comfortable and experienced players are in pressure situations, the better they will perform and the more consistent they will become during the high school season. Besides the junior organizations listed below, many local courses (both public and private) have junior tournaments.
