Tim Chung Named New MIHS Boys Swim and Dive Coach
Mercer Island, WA, October 26, 2023 – Mercer Island High School Athletic Director Lindsey Blaine announced today Tim Chung has been selected as the new head coach of the boys swim and dive team.
Chung is a proud Mercer Island High School alumnus, graduating in 1999. During his time at MIHS he left an indelible mark on the school's swimming history. Inducted into the MIHS Hall of Fame in 2003, he clinched the Washington State High School State titles in both the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medleys in 1998 and 1999. He was a part of the 1996 state championship 200 medley relay, the 1998 200 medley relay, and the 1998 400 free relay teams. He also played a crucial role in Mercer Island High School's boys swim and dive first state championship title in 1998.
“Returning to coach at Mercer Island is like coming full circle to the very pool and community where my journey began,” said Chung. “This is a chance to pass on not only the skills and life lessons I've learned over the years but also the spirit, teamwork, and traditions that defines Mercer Island. MIHS shaped my swimming career, and now, I feel fortunate to have the privilege to be back to inspire the next generation.”
After graduating from MIHS, Chung continued his swimming journey at the University of Texas, where the Longhorns won the 2000, 2001, and 2002 national championships.
Chung graduated from the University of Texas, receiving his Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering. After graduating in 2005, he spent his professional career as an oil and gas reservoir engineer, specializing in appraising oil and gas projects.
Chung’s coaching experience includes coaching at the Mercer Island Country Club summer league swim team, volunteering as a coach for the 2002-2003 MIHS boys swim and dive team, and coaching the River Oaks Country Club and Briar Club summer league teams from 2007 to 2016.
