Shelley Whelan Named New MIHS Girls Head Tennis Coach

Mercer Island, WA, January 16, 2026 – Mercer Island High School Athletic Director Lindsey Blaine is pleased to announce Shelley Whelan has been named the new MIHS Girls Head Girls Tennis Coach.

Whelan was the girls varsity assistant coach for the last year.

“I’m honored to step into the role of Head Girls Tennis Coach at Mercer Island High School,” said Whelan. “This program has a remarkable tradition, and I’m excited to help our athletes grow, compete, and continue building a culture of excellence on and off the court.”

Shelley was an exceptional collegiate athlete and was inducted in 2024 into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Hall of Fame.

During her time at Pomona College, Whelan left an impressive mark on the women’s tennis program. From 1990–1992, she dominated the doubles scene, winning the NCAA Division III Doubles National Championship three consecutive years.

In her final season, she also captured the NCAA Division III Singles National Championship and led the Sagehens to the NCAA Division III Team Championship. She was also named the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Most Outstanding Student-Athlete and was inducted into the Pomona-Pitzer Hall of Fame in 2002.
