Mercer Island, WA, April 9, 2025 – The Mercer Island High School Coding Club competed at the Technical Student Association (TSA) Washington State Competition April 2 to April 5 at the Spokane Convention Center.

It was a great trip for the Coding Club. They participated in four events and made it to the semifinal round in three of events, Coding, Video Game Production, and Webmaster - Web Design.

TSA is a national organization with emphasis on 21st Century Skills and leadership integrated with STEM fields. Here is a link to their national website.

Traditionally, the Coding Club has been focused on Website Development, Video Game Production, Coding Onsite Challenges, and Software Development. Last year they had a Fashion Tech Design team compete and this year they had a Biotechnical design team compete.

Challenge:  Kid’s game, 2 to 4 players, playable on one (1) screen and one (1) keyboard at a time

Category: Webmaster-Website Development (Semifinalist)
Team Members: Derek Borden, Aiden Chen, and Elliot Chang
Challenge: Design a website for a vegan/vegetarian restaurant.  Showcase the restaurant’s approach (such as farm-to-table, preparation processes, and sustainability) to the food served in the restaurant.

Team Members: Vivian Gan, Nikita Overchkin, Hugh Borden, and Heechan Kim
Challenge: Tissue Engineering is a biomedical engineering discipline that uses a combination of cells, engineering, materials methods, and suitable biochemical and physicochemical factors to restore, maintain, improve, or replace different types of biological tissues.
