MIHS Boys Wrestling Captures 3A KingCo Championship Title
Mercer Island, WA, February 10, 2025 - The Mercer Island High School boys wrestling team was crowned KingCo Champions on Saturday, February 8 capturing the title at the WIAA KingCo 3A District Wrestling Tournament at Juanita High School.
Mercer Island dominated the competition, taking on teams from six schools, including Bellevue, Inglemoor, Liberty, Sammamish, Interlake and Highline. MIHS secured the win with a team total of 217 points over second place Bellevue’s 199 points.
Head coach, David Woo said the athletes' hard work and effort over the season has paid off. “The MI Wrestling team confirmed that not only are they contenders, but top level wrestlers in the state.”
This is the first time in over a decade that MIHS wrestling has earned KingCo’s top prize. In addition to the team award, MIHS wrestlers also took titles in six weight classes and qualified eleven wrestlers to the WIAA State Championship.
Coach Woo, who is in his second year at MIHS, shifted the focus this season by taking the team to some of the region’s most competitive tournaments. The approach seems to have paid off.
“It is extremely impressive how many athletes qualified for state this year and we’re all very excited,” said Woo. “I want this to become the norm because these kids have shown tremendous growth and I believe this is only the beginning.”
