KING 5 Prep Zone: These Mercer Island athletes are running away from the pack and after their dreams
Mercer Island, WA, November 6, 2024 – Mercer Island High School cross country runners Sophia Rodriguez, Victoria Rodriguez and Owen Powell were featured on the KING 5 Prep Zone by Sports Reporter Chris Egan Wednesday night.
The trio was interviewed at Robinswood Park in Bellevue on Wednesday, October 16, at their last meet of the regular season. KING 5 also brought a drone out to a cross country practice on Tuesday, October 22 to get footage of the trio and cross country team practicing.
Both the boys and girls teams have won the KingCo and District championships. They will be competing at the 3A State Championship at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday, November 9.
Powell, a senior at MIHS, set a national record for the fastest time on a 3-mile high school course on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the Woodbridge Cross Country Class in Irvine, California.
Sophia, a sophomore, and Powell won the 2023 3A Cross Country State Championship. Victoria, a senior, finished second in the 2023 3A State Championship. Victoria will be running for Wake Forest University next year.
Powel was named the Gatorade Washington Boys Track & Field Player of the Year in 2023-234 school year.
