Gift of Music Project by MIHS students Honored by Hershey’s Heartwarming Project 2024
MIHS Students Secured Grant to Support Instrument Repairs for Refugees in Montenegro
Mercer Island, WA, November 14, 2024 – The Gift of Music project, a youth-led initiative dedicated to bringing the transformative power of music to refugees, has been recognized by the Hershey’s Heartwarming Project 2024 as one of 134 changemaking projects worldwide.
This honor highlights the commitment and compassion of MIHS students Denis Batalov, Elliott Yaroslavsky, and Leo Saloranta who lead the Gift of Music. This trio was also joined by Sasha Zhupanov from Gunn High School in California.
The Hershey’s Heartwarming Project’s recognition came with a $500 grant that supported instrument repairs for refugees in Montenegro, helping to ensure that music can continue to be a source of comfort and expression for displaced individuals. Through this grant, the Gift of Music team was able to further its mission of providing instruments, lessons, and musical encouragement to refugees.
Earlier this year, the Mercer Island Reporter featured Gift of Music and its goals as the students prepared for a week in the refugee camp. Their journey, filled with the sounds of hope and resilience, is helping to break down barriers and foster connection through music. Hershey’s Heartwarming Project, organized by Youth Service America (YSA), supports youth-led projects that strengthen communities and inspire young people to act as changemakers.
“We are thrilled to support the Gift of Music project and recognize the incredible work these students are doing to create positive change,” said Hershey’s Foundation representative Katie Reusch.
