142 MIHS DECA Students Qualify For State Competition

Mercer Island, WA, January 27, 2026 - The MIHS DECA team once again had an amazing year at their Area 3 competition as they qualified 142 students to take part in the State DECA Competition, which takes place at the end of February.
This is the highest number of MIHS DECA students that have ever qualified for the State Tournament.
This is an incredible feat and means that almost half of the MIHS DECA team of just over 300 students qualified. Once again, our students committed to preparing, studying, and practicing for this DECA competition and the results are a reflection of that work.
“Each year we think we’ve reached our pinnacle and each year these MIHS students double down and work harder to achieve at an even higher level. We couldn’t be more proud of their work,” said MIHS DECA co-Advisor Jennifer McLellan.
MIHS competes in DECA Area 3, which is one of the most competitive in the nation with several schools that are powerhouses in the DECA world.
MIHS had 301 DECA students compete in the Area 3 DECA competition which was held on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Each student studied, took practice tests, role-played business case studies, honed their extemporaneous speaking skills, and (for some of them) wrote long involved business plans (up to 20 pages) and business research papers.
This past weekend, MIHS learned which students had qualified for the State Tournament.
“We are so grateful to our Mercer Island community”, said McLellan. “Our teachers, our business teachers, our parents, our community volunteers, and everyone else who continue to support our DECA chapter and our student’s access to these experiences so they may grow in confidence and content as young business people.’
