125 MIHS DECA Students Qualify For Washington State Championship

Mercer Island, WA, January 29, 2025 – Mercer Island High School is pleased to announce 125 MIHS DECA students will be heading to the Washington State DECA Championship February 27 through March 1 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.

This is the highest number of MIHS DECA students that have ever qualified for the State Tournament.

“This was an incredible year for our MIHS DECA chapter. We say that every year as we are surrounded by extraordinary students but this year, especially, these emerging business leaders brought their ‘A’ games to our Area competition,” said MIHS DECA co-Advisor Jennifer McLellan.

MIHS competes in DECA Area 3, which is one of the most competitive in the nation with several schools that are powerhouses in the DECA world.

MIHS had 309 DECA students compete in the Area 3 DECA competition which was held on Friday, December 13, 2024. Each student studied, took practice tests, role-played business case studies, honed their extemporaneous speaking skills, and (for some of them) wrote long  involved business plans (up to 20 pages) and business research papers.

This past Friday, MIHS learned which students had qualified for the State Tournament.

 “We are so proud of our Mercer Island High School students and their results from this event,” said McLellan. “Even more so than our incredible results of our state-bound students, is the impact and results of ALL our students. Watching a student learn and gain confidence to go in front of DECA judges and pitch a proposal and grow from that experience is profound. We are so proud of ALL our DECA students at MIHS and how they all showed up and competed with poise, intellect, and courage.”
