Title:  FAP121&FAP122--STEEL BAND

Pre-Requisite:  No prior experience required

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of drumming concepts through a low stress and spirited group environment. Music performed will include Reggae, Hip hop, Folk, Rock and traditional music styles. All instruments are provided and homework is minimal. Throughout the course, you’ll study the fundamentals of playing drums, reading music, and writing your own songs and will experience the thrill of performance. Drums covered in this course include Steel Drums from Trinidad and Tobago and hand drums such as Djembe from West Africa, Bongos from Cuba, Congas from Africa, Cajons from Peru, and Doumbeks from the Middle East. Students who are proficient in playing the drum set may enroll to play the drum set for the class with instructor approval. Advanced credit is available for students enrolling in this class for a 2nd time.

Work Load:  The majority of work and practice in this class will happen during class time. Outside of class, the Steel Band will perform two concerts per year as well as occasionally for the student body on campus.

Why would you be interested in the Class:   Steel Band is a class for any student who wishes to explore making music in a fun ensemble setting. Steel band is ideal for those students who have not received any formal instruction on an instrument, but is equally well suited for students with musical experience looking for a secondary performing ensemble.
