Title: DSC175--CHEMISTRY 1 HON
Pre-Requisite: It is expected that students have prior knowledge of algebra, graphing, and slope.
Course Description: This course teaches basic principles of chemistry and how they relate to other courses and daily life. Topics include laboratory practices, properties of matter, atomic theory and structure, bonds, chemical reactions, and acids/bases. It is expected that honors students take responsibility for completing assignments, lab reports, and preparing for tests. MIHS science courses will be built on the observational, investigative, and problem-solving skills learned in this course, as well as the laboratory techniques and technical writing skills developed.
Work Load: Group/individual work, lab work, practice/homework including worksheets and textbook questions, summative assessments. 2 hours/week of work outside of class depending on how effective the student's use of class time is.
Why would you be interested in the Class: Students should take this class if they want a deeper exploration of Chemistry and want the challenge of an Honors level pace. While this class is not required for Chemistry 2 Honors, it does help prepare students for the rigor and work ethic required for other honors-level Science classes.
