Title:    AEN423&AEN424--ENGLISH 12

Pre-Requisite: Required 4th year of English

Course Description: In this course, students will develop and refine critical thinking and academic writing skills that will be useful in many situations (not just in English classes!) In the end, students will be able to engage critically with contemporary forms of communication. Students synthesize academic sources, analyze arguments, develop lines of inquiry, and revise their writing. Students will write expository, persuasive, creative, and professional assignments. Nonfiction articles, short stories, poetry, and music are included. Students will select one nonfiction or fiction book each semester to read on a relevant theme.

Work Load: While the course aims to prepare students for college expectations, most of the work will be done in class. By attending and engaging, homework is minimized. All major papers are available for revision. A key component of this course is self-assessment of academic growth.

Why would you be interested in the Class: This course aims to improve writing, reading and research skills beyond English literature. Students who are interested in current events, enjoy learning about complex issues, and want to express their opinions clearly will enjoy this course. Readings are short stories, articles, documentaries, research and journalism. Books are largely nonfiction, including graphic novels and memoirs, and will be chosen by the students.
