Pre-Requisite: GME 411 and 412 Radio and Podcasting

Course Description: This advanced course immerses second-year broadcasting students in hands-on media creation through KMIH 88.9 The Bridge, our award-winning student-run radio station. Students deepen their skills in podcasting, audio storytelling, live broadcasting, and digital media production while sharpening communication skills through interviewing, scripting, editing, and sound design. They also explore music programming, sports broadcasting, audio production, public service campaigns, news reporting, and broadcast/web technology, with opportunities to take on introductory leadership roles. Throughout the course, students gain real-world communication, creative, and technical skills that translate to future academic and professional opportunities. In this dynamic, hands-on environment, they produce meaningful content for real audiences, build their voice, elevate their communication skills, and grow as storytellers and broadcasters.

Work Load: Most of the work in this class is hands-on and completed during class time, giving students practical experience in broadcasting and media production. There are also opportunities to cover MIHS sports through live play-by-play broadcasting outside of school hours. Students who choose to compete for national broadcasting and podcasting awards should be prepared for additional work and commitment.

They have the opportunity to explore their passions, work closely with peers, and take deeper dives into live broadcasting and podcasting. Students also begin to gain knowledge of radio operations, take on leadership responsibilities, create content for live audiences, build their voice, and tell compelling stories that showcase their creativity and talent. This course prepares students for future academic and professional opportunities in media, communications, and beyond.
