Course Description: In this course, students develop and refine critical thinking and academic writing skills that will be useful in college level English and cross-curricular courses. Students will be able to engage critically with contemporary forms of communication. Students synthesize academic sources, analyze arguments, develop lines of inquiry, and revise their writing. Students will write expository, persuasive, creative, and professional assignments. Nonfiction articles, short stories, poetry, and music are included. Students will read 1-2 texts, fiction and nonfiction, each quarter.

Work Load: While the course aims to prepare students for college expectations, most of the work will be done in class. By attending and engaging, homework is minimized. All major papers are available for revision. A key component of this course is self-assessment of academic growth.

Why You Might Be Interested In The Class: This course aims to improve writing, reading and research skills beyond traditional literature analysis and prepare students for college courses. Students will have an opportunity to explore current events, discuss complex societal issues, and connect personal choice to learning.
